Lighting Associate (LA) Program/Exam
The Lighting Associate Program offers a comprehensive introduction to lighting and lighting design. Each course runs approximately 40–45 minutes and covers the fundamental principles outlined in the topics below. Updated with key industry trends and emerging technologies, these courses are delivered in a convenient webinar format with voiceover and are available exclusively to ALA members.
Any ALA member can become a Lighting Associate (LA) by completing all 10 online training courses and passing the final exam. This program provides a well-rounded foundation of knowledge about the lighting industry.
Recommended Skill Level: This program is designed for beginner to intermediate.
How to get Started:
- Order the Lighting Associate Program through your e-learning account
- Complete and Pass Final Exam: Upon passing, ALA members will be acknowledged as an ALA Lighting Associate.

About the Residential Lighting Training Manual (RLTM)
The Residential Lighting Training Manual is the cornerstone of the ALA’s educational program and the foundation for earning the LS designation. It is the only comprehensive guide covering all aspects of the residential lighting industry and is widely used by:
- Sales associates
- Lighting designers
- Manufacturer representatives
Recommended Skill Level: This program is designed for intermediate to advanced.
How to Get Started
- Order the Training Manual through your e-learning account (available in print and digital)
- Attend a Training Seminar (optional): Check for upcoming four-day training course dates.
- Complete and Pass Final Exam: Upon passing, ALA members will be acknowledged as an ALA Lighting Specialist.
The Certified Lighting Manufacturers Representative (CLMR) Program & Application
The CLMR accreditation program is designed to recognize the important role Manufacturers Representatives play in the lighting industry, as well as provide training for those new to the industry.
Certified Lighting Consultant (CLC) Application
Certified Lighting Consultant (CLC®) is the highest designation offered by the ALA. The CLC examination is comprised of a combination of both
Recertification Requirements
To maintain your LA, LS, or CLMR certification, you must recertify every two years by earning CEU credit hours through ALA-approved training. These credits can be completed at any time during the two-year certification period.
