Light your way to better vision

See beautifully with the right light

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, however, as we age our eyes often have difficulty focusing and adjusting to glare. While natural vision changes that come with age are unavoidable, it is possible to make a few minor changes to improve the quality of life for seniors. New glasses often help, but proper lighting is just as necessary for safety, comfort, and enjoyment.

The American Lighting Association (ALA) is sharing a document from the Illuminating Engineering Society about lighting for aging eyes. The report is a valuable resource for people of all ages. After all, young people often have older visitors, and will one day themselves benefit from planning for future needs.

Without a good lighting plan, the inevitability of diminished eyesight leads to frustration and reduced enjoyment. “Lighting Your Way to Better Vision,” explains that “Older people require light levels that are three to five times higher than younger people need, due to normal age-related changes to the eyes and eye diseases.”
