Newest lighting trends add character

Lighting gives a room character, warmth, and energy. It creates a sense of safety and comfort, and is an essential element of good interior and architectural design.

As Jill Waage, editorial director of Lighting magazine and editor-in-chief of Traditional Home, explains in a new video for the American Lighting Association, good scale is essential to creating a sense of balance in a space. Oversize fixtures provide compelling focal points, both indoors and out, and help establish a room’s style.

Natural materials visually ground a space and deliver instant texture. Look for fixtures styled with hair and hide, alabaster, quartzite, and rattan.

Although neutrals are always in style, color is making a notable comeback. Popular hues include sage green, pale blue, and earth tones. For a subtler infusion of color, consider mixed metal finishes, such as satin brass, brushed gold, and weathered bronze.

LED lighting technology gives traditional designs a modern twist. Crystal chandeliers transform from fanciful to sleek with the introduction of LEDs, which allow for more geometric and edgy designs.
