A hot trend in lighting today is black finishes – matte black, textured black, anything black. As Rick Seidman, president and CEO of Quoizel Lighting, explains in a new video, consumers love their new black fixtures, and that’s not all. Homeowners are making their own style statements by mixing different finishes, shapes and colors for a customized look.

A new video from ALA features Samantha Hart of Better Homes & Gardens and Rick Seidman of Quoizel discussing the popularity of black fixtures, such as the Quoizel fixtures (right).

It is not imperative to match the same fixture finish or shape throughout your whole house. As Seidman explains, have fun, but make sure the fixtures coordinate and live well with your other fixtures. That gives you the ability to have your own style without looking mismatched or disjointed.

CHANGE
UP

Modify your lighting, your way.

To satisfy the desire of style-saavy consumers who want unique pieces to define their décor, lighting manufacturers are stepping up with fixtures that can be customized with moveable arms and panels that can be twisted, turned or even bent into different shapes for one-of-a-kind looks. For example, the LED panels on the Fredrick Ramond pendants (shown below) can be rotated to perfectly suit a dining room space.

EXPERT
ADVICE

Ask a lighting professional.

I want to update my living room, but have a very modest budget and no time to do a lot of DIY work myself. What are two or three inexpensive, quick ways to make a big impact on the look and vibe of my room?

-Candace A.

Three things that will make a noticeable impact to a room are new paint color, an updated light fixture and dimmers on all (or most) of the room's light sources. After finding your pefect, eye-catching light fixture, select a paint color that will highlight the fixture as well as complement the rest of your cor. While painting is a bit of a time investment, the immediate pay off will be worth it.

It is best to have your new light fixture professionally installed for optimum performance and proper placement. The staff at an ALA-member showroom can help you find the right fixture to suit your style and budget, and set you up with a qualified installer. And, while dimmers may sound insignificant, they can make a world of difference to the look and mood of your space.
